Proposed minutes from the April 10, 2025 meeting

1. Call to Order – Co-President Jan Wayne opened the meeting at 10 a.m.

2. Jan thanked hostesses: Patti Little, Treasurer Maggie Mugan, Recording Secretary Denise Layfield, and Barbara Gresh and also thanked Website Coordinator Sally Gregg for updates to the newsletter and website.

3. Attendance – Membership Chair Margaret Stone took attendance and welcomed four visitors: Co-President Anne Lee’s cousin, Mary Lee Cantey (second visit); Ginny Mitchell’s sister, Anne Waring (second visit); Julie Huneycutt’s guest, Amy Lynn Holt (second visit); and Advisor Sallie Carr’s guest, Sally Gudger (second visit).

4. Introduction of Speaker – Vice President Ginger Michel introduced Cathy Franklin-Griffin, District 1 & 2 Director of The Garden Club of North Carolina, among many other distinguished roles and qualifications throughout her life. Franklin-Griffin gave an update on restoration efforts from garden clubs and other groups to recover from Hurricane Helene which ravaged Western North Carolina on September 29, 2024. She provided each member with a written statement answering the question: “Why Be a Part of a Federated Garden Club?”

5. Old Business – The membership approved the March 2025 meeting minutes, including announcements of the changes to the by-laws that were voted at the March 2025 meeting. Those revisions have been made and are now posted in the Yearbook.

6. New Business

a. Treasurer Report – Treasurer Maggie M presented the current accounting of garden club monies: $15,778.28 at the beginning of this month and, accounting for all transactions this month, the account was at $15,427.24 as of this meeting.

b. Ways and Means Update – Vice President Ginger M updated members on the study being done to collect monies to cover the club’s operating expenses. She invited all members to an informational meeting on April 24, 2025, at 4 p.m. at the Hendersonville Country Club’s Dogwood room. She advised members to look for information that she will be emailing next week and encouraged them to read both the email and attachments.

c. State Meetings News – Advisor Sallie C encouraged members to consider attending the state garden club convention in May 2025 in Winston-Salem as well as other state garden club events this year.

d. Gardening – Pardee Atrium -- Barbara G announced the Spring cleanup will be on May 13, 2025, at 10 a.m. and the Fall cleanup will be Sept. 3, 2025. Sign-up sheets for maintenance of atrium and the Bi-Centennial garden were sent around for members to sign up for specific dates to complete the work. Sallie C gave an update on the Bi-Centennial Garden cleanup and maintenance effort and asked members to sign up for a week this season to help keep it looking good.

7. Christmas Bazaar 2025 – The date for this year’s event is on Dec. 6, 2025. The bazaar

Chairs are June Brown, Co-Presidents Anne L and Jan W. Jan W gave an update on progress on the bazaar. Plans are underway already. She announced chairs for various segments of the bazaar as follows with slots to be filled in by members: Committee Chairs: Wreath Bar – Dana G and ?. Bulbs – Barbara G and ?. Bows and Crafts – June. Kitchen – Jana and Sallie. Live Greens – Carol Lyne. Logs - ?. Washi – Laura. Mailboxes - ?. Publicity – Amy Smith and ?. Logistics -?. Bulbs: Maggie. Jan W asked people to think about what committees they will be on this year and to sign up as well as to start collecting pine cones and 8-to-10 inch terra cotta flower pots for the bulbs. Recycle pots if you bought bulbs last year.

8. Fun Thymes – Jan W gave update of plans to go to 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Tour of The Peony Farm, Inman, S.C. with lunch at Southern Manners in Landrum, S.C. The group will carpool from Ingles at Highland Lake leave at 9:20 a.m.

9. May/June meetings –

May -- Mickey Lively, Garden Gate Nursery

June -- Fred Thompson Bluebirds, Flat Rock Park, boxed picnic lunch afterwards, bring check or Venmo at the May meeting

10. Annie’s Tour of the Gardens was offered after the meeting for members to enjoy.

11. Celebrations and concerns: Prayers for Susan Frost and Sallie C’s pending grandchild.
