Co President Jan Wayne welcomed and greeted all. She thanked hostesses Sallie Carr, Dana Groves, Sally Gudger and Amy Lynn Holt.
Membership Report – Membership Chair Margaret Stone said we have 34 active members with one more candidate potentially joining soon, and then we will be at our cap of 35 members. She introduced Lou Hackney and Dana Grove’s neighbor, Staci Wooten, who recently relocated here from Georgia.
1. Speaker – Vice President Ginger Michel introduced our guest speaker The Rev. Tim Jones at St. James Episcopal Church in Hendersonville. He’s a writer, poet, photographer, artist and self-described “gardener’s assistant.” He said art has the power to heal and change the world. He discussed his view of “the soul” which he described as the generative power of life. His new book is called “Love Still Here,” a book of poems. His books are available online – website: “redcottagearkpress.com.” He read numerous poems he’s authored including, “In Praise of Gardens,” “Speechless,” “How I Know,” “Flame Azalea,” and “Unfurling.” His photographs are on display at Pardee Hospital Cancer Center and at the Hendersonville Rescue Mission.
2. New Business – Minutes from June 2025 meeting were approved.
3. Treasurer’s Report – Interim Treasurer Ginger M presented the treasury report. The club has a balance of $14,749.02 at present. The Venmo account will be closed. Anne Waring has agreed to become the club’s treasurer. Former treasurer Maggie Mugan recently resigned from the position of treasurer when she relocated; she is still a member of the club. Next year’s budget will be presented in October for the membership to approve in November 2025.
4. GCNC Committee – Advisor Sallie C updated the membership on the status of a liason between our club and the Garden Club of North Carolina. Paula Irving, Margaret S, Karen Saine and Sallie C will be on an ad hoc committee to reinforce ties to the state and update members on programming at the state level. State garden club will have its Fall board meeting on Monday, Sept. 8, 2025, in Raleigh. It costs $32 to attend. Districts 1 and 2 meeting with state officers will be held on Oct. 7, 2025. Several members, including Sallie C, will attend near Hickory, NC. All are welcome.
Old Business
5. The By-Laws need to be amended to reflect the updated cost of the dues increase that was voted on and approved in May 2025. The language update was presented and will be voted on next month. The Proposed By-Law Revision Article VII Dues amendment will read: “The club may modify the dues by a vote of simple majority of the membership after recommendation by the Board. The vote may be either electronic or in person assuming there is a quorum.” The club will vote in September 2025. Sallie C passed out written copies of the wording that will be used in the amendment.
6. Bazaar Info – Working Committees are now being formed for Christmas Bazaar 2025. All members were encouraged to sign up for multiple committees and assignments by August 28, 2025. Members may sign up online or in person at meetings. Margaret S encouraged all to sign up for lots of different committees to meet people, have fun and share the workload. The following committees are opportunities for all: Washi, Food/Kitchen, Crafts, Bulbs, Publicity, Wreath Bar, Logs, Live Greens, Check Out, Mail Box saddles. Leaders stressed the need for workers! Bulbs have been ordered. Wreaths will be ordered by the end of the month, and members were encouraged to complete preorders for bulbs and wreaths – order sheets were passed out. We need white pine cones; look around for them in September.
7. Fall cleanup is Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025, at 10 a.m. for the atrium at Pardee Hospital.
8. Fun Thymes: All are invited to an outing on August 21, 2025 @ 10 a.m. at Amy Lynn’s Echo Hill Flower Farm, 529 Pace Road, Hendersonville, NC. $6.00. Bring an appetizer/snack to share and a drink for yourself.
