Our Donations at Work
Long before Lady Bird Johnson began brightening the nation’s highways with wildflowers in 1967, an enterprising garden club in Western North Carolina was already at work promoting and protecting the beauty the public spaces in their own backyard. Now, decades later the Land O Sky Garden Club (LOSGC) can point to dozens of community parks and gardens in the Hendersonville area that have prospered and grown thanks to their time and talents.
Since its beginning in 1957, members of the LOSGC have worked with a wide range of local organizations to enrich the natural beauty of the region – partnering often with non-profit groups that are equally committed to the preservation and conservation of common greenspaces and gardens. Some of those organizations include, the NC Arboretum, Bullington Gardens, The Park at Flat Rock, The 4-H Club and Rhododendron Park in Laurel Park.
In addition, the Club has long allocated monies to organizations throughout Henderson County that provide educational opportunities to students in the community interested in landscape architecture, horticulture and agriculture. In 1998, the Club established an annual scholarship fund through Blue Ridge Community College that, to date, has awarded more than $33,000 in scholarship donations.
As the needs of the community change from year to year or in response to natural disasters such as Hurricane Helene in 2025, the LOSGC stands ready to reach out with financial support, as well as hands on help. From its early days of flower shows, flea markets and garden tours, the LOSGC has been committed to annual fundraising efforts to support local needs. For the last few years, the Club has raised more than $10,000 each December through its popular Christmas Bazaar.
