Meet our President, Ginger Michel

Ginger Michel, with LOSGC friend Mickey Lively at Mickey’s nursery in Flat Rock, NC

How long have you been a member of the Land O’Sky Garden Club?

GM: I joined in 2021.

What drew you to becoming a member?

GM: I knew a number of the members all of whom I like very much. I had just bought my house in Highland Lake Village and hoped to use what I learned at garden club on my yard.

Tell us a little about yourself and your family.

GM: I am Bill Humleker's first cousin; and therefore, Jana Humleker's (my sponsor), cousin-in-law. I moved to the Hendersonville/Flat Rock area after I retired in 2018. Before I retired - for the last twenty years of my career - I lived and worked in the New York City area, where I worked in the financial services industry.

I grew up in Wisconsin (as did Jana and Bill) the youngest of three children. Went to school in Wisconsin through high school and attended and graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. I love to read. I love to go to the theater. I love being with my family...and my dog, Lizzy, a cute little dachshund. And I like to learn.

What do you most enjoy about the benefits of membership?

GM: While I love the programs at our (mostly) monthly gatherings, I love the satisfaction of working as a group to create the items we sell at the bazaar. I like getting to know other members of the garden club better. I like helping to make the Atrium a beautiful refuge for people who are undergoing treatment in the Radiology Department and for the people who help them. We are an amazing group of women!

Any bragging rights from your gardening experience or flower growing?

GM: Well...I don't know how much bragging I can do. I am more aware of what plants might grow in parts of my yard. And mostly the plants I put in the ground live. THAT's an accomplishment! I like figuring out what kinds of arrangements work best for me. For instance, the color on the shady side of my house is in plants I put in pots.. I'm trying to add dimension and texture to my shade garden now. We'll see how that works out this spring and summer.

Top travel destinations on your bucket list?

GM: I am traveling to Eastern Europe this spring. But at the top of my bucket list is Venice. And Pompeii. And who knows where that might lead me?

What do you want our members to know?

GM:  I do not view my role as president as leading so much as managing the things that need to be done. I will do my best to make myself available to hear your concerns or ideas or to answer your questions. I do not have all the answers. I'm often wrong. But I listen. So please reach out if you feel the need to be heard.
